The Institute of Spanish Studies was established in 1950 in cooperation with the Universities of San Francisco and Valencia. In 1985 the Institute became an independent program; at present it is associated with Longwood University of Virginia. Classes in Valencia are held at the American Institute, with its own fully equipped premises.
Founded in 1839 in Farmville, Virginia, Longwood University was recently named a 'Best Buy' in America's 100 Best College Buys (1997, 1998, 1999,2000), a national publication which profiles the highest academically rated schools with the lowest annual costs. The 1999 News and World Report ranked Longwood University the top 10 South Regional Public Universities, as well as a Best Value among all private Regional Universities in the South. Longwood University is a coeducational, comprehensive state college offering programs leading to bachelor's and masters´s degrees in a wide variety of subjects, and it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). With a legacy dating back over 150 years, Longwood has developed a lifestyle of learning that extends far beyond the classroom; the Longwood University Office of International Studies currently sponsors 27 programs in 18 countries. For more information, visit Longwood´s web site at http://www.longwood.edu

Credits for the courses taken at the Institute of Spanish Studies may be obtained directly from the Institute of Spanish Studies or through Longwood University.

In addition, the Institute of Spanish Studies has established collaboration agreements with other American Institutions such as Nazareth College, Marywood University, Northern Virginia Community College, Hillsborough Community College, Framingham University, and others.

Why would you choose the Institute of Spanish Studies for your program?:

Experience: We offer a proven method to acquire in-depth knowledge of the Spanish language, literature and culture. In addition to regular classes, our program of cultural activities and the direct contact with Spanish people are ideal ways to attain this objective. The faculty is composed of highly qualified professors from Spanish Universities, and most US educational institutions accept credits for our courses.

Personal Attention: At the Institute, our students come first. The small classes and individual attention paid to each student allow for very close interaction between students and teachers. As a result, most students talk about the feeling of being in a large family, where their personal needs are addressed.

References: The Institute is proud of having had over 20,000 satisfied students since 1950. Many American colleges and universities have sponsored our Institute and entrusted us with their students. See our list of participating institutions or call for more information.

Specialized Programs: We will be glad to customize a program to suit your needs. If you have 15 or more students and you need a program during different dates, longer or shorter, more or fewer classes, or a different content than our current instruction courses, please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
